Finding
a suitable Acupuncturist
Choosing an acupuncturist will ultimately be a personal choice
but it can be made easier by following a few simple guidelines.:-
A good place to start when choosing an acupuncturist is to try
and seek advice from friends and family who may have been treated
successfully by a practitioner, was the outcome of the treatment
successful, did they feel comfortable about all aspects of the
experience etc.
Acupuncture can be available on the NHS but you will need a reccomendation
from your local health authority or GP. Some GPs are trained acupuncturists
and will offer treatment through their surgery and many NHS hospital
pain clinics now offer acupuncture as a treatment. To find out
more about what is available it may be useful to seek advice from
your Doctor or local health authority before you make your final
decision.
Always ask the acupuncturist if they are certified by a recognised
body and how long have they been practicing acupuncture. Most
qualified British Acupuncturists will have trained at a college
accredited by the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC). Check they
hold some appropriate insurance.
(The British Acupuncture Council (BAcC), holds a nation-wide register
of members and governs acupuncture in the United Kingdom).
Establish if the Acupuncturist has any experience of treating
people with a similar condition to you.
It would be useful to establish, either from an initial meeting
or through a telephone call, that you feel comfortable with any
potential therapist and you would feel confident they could treat
your condition successfully.
Feeling at ease with the acupuncturist is vitally important as
you may be required to reveal personal details during diagnosis
and subsequent treatment sessions
.
It is important that you ask questions both before and after any
treatment offered or given.
At a first meeting (this maybe your first treament) ensure the
acupuncturist asks about all your symptoms, that they understand
them and how they affect you. If you are taking any other medication
make sure, that if the therapist recommends you take herbs or
other supplements as part of your treatment these are safe and
appropriate. Enquire if they use
disposable needles. (All B.Ac.C. members are required to use pre-sterilised,
single use, disposable needles and they must make arrangements
for their safe disposal).
